A day in the life of...
Have you ever wondered what roles are represented at Bauer? Have you ever thought about how your "normal" day compares to the normal day of others? In our series "A day in the life of" we uncover what a typical day looks like for our employees in our four different Business Areas and markets.
In this edition, we take you on a journey to Norway, to step into the shoes of Torkil Torsvik - Radio Rock host, journalist, podcaster, musician and superdad.
...Torkil Torsvik
Radio Rock presenter, journalist, and musician from Norway
My day starts abruptly at 6 o’clock…
… I’ve got a one-year-old alarm clock-boy who wants his porridge at the table, ten past six – SHARP!
I always eat breakfast at home…
… It’s written in the Norwegian constitution: Thou shalt eat your breakfast at home with your family.
Then it’s swiftly onto lunchbox duty…
… In Norway we’ve got a nice culture of “packed lunch”, so my day starts with making five such packages of lunch - sandwiches, fruit, yoghurt etc. Yes, I’ve got more than one alarm clock-boy. Then: kindergarden delivery.
I cannot leave for work without a shower…
My long hair needs a shower, or else the day will be awful. To get to work I use my electric bike in the summer, or the subway in winter (nowadays wearing a face mask of course).
The first order of the day when I get into work is…
Coffee! Black coffee from our machine.
Then: research rock-news and rock-history for today’s broadcast.
My job consists of broadcasting to Norwegian rock music-lovers daily, as they finish at work and drive home (every afternoon from 2 – 6 PM)…
... I also make weekly podcast episodes about my favourite band, Iron Maiden, and write articles for the Radio Rock website/app. I work most closely with my boss, Stian Eliassen.
I produce my own show and most of my co-workers are at their home-offices because of the Covid-19-situation, so it can be kind of lonely. But the few people that are still at the office give me beautiful smiles all day, so no worries. I enjoy daily interactions with colleagues, record-companies, musicians and other people guesting my show/podcast.
Meeting new people with the same passion for rock music as me is the best part of my job…
… I also love the rock/punk/metal-nostalgia, which is a big part of my DJ-broadcasts. I’m really proud that I now use almost all my competencies during a day at work - as a radio-journalist, as a writer and as a rock-musician.
You know what? I think I found the PERFECT job for a guy like me, right here!
I also love that I never have any meetings.
I read everything our listeners send in…
… I actually read every message and email sent by listeners and up-and-coming rock musicians. I can’t answer all of them, but I wish they knew that I listen to all the demos and singles.
Lunchtime for me is at 11.30…
… I eat a packed lunch. OF COURSE (Norwegian constitution). Especially now during the Covid-19 lockdown. I try to keep away from stores and restaurants. Yesterday’s lasagne is my favourite. Mmmmm.
I always eat at my desk, while reading some looong article about ancient rockers, or listening to (mostly not great) demo-tapes.
I use my commute home to unwind…
… Enjoying some silence and no-screen-time before I open the door back home, and ta-ta-ta-taaaa! – SUPERDAD is home, ready for everything. Hiking, biking, swimming, skateboarding, trampoline, soccer, feeding the geese (we live next to a bird sanctuary).
I’m always going to bed too late…
…Often around midnight, but my passion for music and entertainment gets me up again in the morning.
After the kids have gone to bed I usually work on my very first children’s book for 9-12 year olds. It’s about a robot ninja-boy and will be published this spring. I really hope we’ve finished off the virus by then, because I’m planning a HUGE launch party! You’re all invited to celebrate the NINJAROBOT DIARIES!
... and last but not least, here are my top 5 tracks for today (they change daily!):
- Faith No More – Midlife Crisis (I’m 42 years old. Love this one more and more)
- Rainbow – Stargazer («Rising» was the CASSETTE OF THE WEEK in my show, and this song is soooo beautiful)
- Megadeth – Angry Again (So groovy...)
- Iron Maiden – Aces High (Kicks off one of history's best metal albums: «Powerslave»)
- Van Halen – Panama (RIP Eddie Van Halen)
