A day in the life of...
Have you ever wondered what roles are represented at Bauer? Have you ever thought about how your "normal" day compares to the normal day of others? In our series "A day in the life of" we uncover what a typical day looks like for our employees in our four different Business Areas and markets.
In this edition of "A Day in the Life of", we're excited to introduce you to Kaylee Golding, Producer on the Magic Breakfast Show.
Thank you for sharing your day with us, Kaylee!
...Kaylee Golding
I usually get up at 4:30am…
… if we are working in the actual studio. But during the lockdown I’ve had a little lie in and I now wake up at 5:30am!
All I need to get me going in the morning is a nice, fresh shower…
… I think a shower always revitalizes your mind in the morning! I always plan out my stuff the day before. It’s just so it’s one less thing to think about in the morning, and so I can use all my morning brain power for work!
One of the best things about working on a Breakfast show is…
…getting a taxi in the morning. I love a cheeky nap in the car to work! The first thing I do when I get to the studio is set up my laptop and make some breakfast. I always start the day off with a hot chocolate. Golden Square has the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted in my life. I am obsessed.
I have a catch up with the Breakfast Producer, Brian, while I’m logging on. He’s a good vibe and is ready for banter at like 5:30am, which always helps wake you up ready for the show! Then I have a good search for any news stories or topics that we can talk about in the show.
Once the show is all prepped (we do a lot the day before but always add a little more in the morning), I set up the studio and wait for the presenters to come in. I have a little catch up with our hosts, Harriet and Ronan, to get them all talkative and ready for the show. Then we kick off the Magic Breakfast Show!
Almost every day I hear stories from people whose lives have been changed – and even saved – through being inspired by our magazine…
…There are always a few bits to record afterwards. Us producers then have a quick catch up chat. Then I head down to the office, by then all the team is in. Then I do some editing and more prep for the next day!
I don’t have many daily meetings, usually just the one. The breakfast show is a small team so a lot of our creative discussions just happen casually rather than booking in meetings.
I once got to call a listener and tell her she’d just won £100,000…
… Speaking to a caller after they have just won a life changing amount of money is such a brilliant feeling. Like Magic has actually changed her life!
Another great memory was when we spotted a clip of a train worker called Jacob on Twitter. His voice was soooo smooth and someone suggested that he needed to be on Magic. As soon as I saw it I thought ‘yep, we need to have him on!’ So, we tracked him down, brought him on the breakfast show and now his doing a variety of shows for Magic!
I interact a lot with the listeners…
… Whether that be over the phone or on social media. I love hearing all the different stories and how excited they get when I’m prepping them to go on air!
My fave part about my role is…
…just being in the studio! It is so much fun. It’s just good vibes, a lot of chit chat and a lot of laughter. And the good energy between the songs really makes for the best links when the song ends!
I usually eat lunch at like 11:30AM…
… It’s pretty early for some people but when you’re on breakfast hours that’s the norm. If I have dinner leftovers then I will have that for lunch, but sometimes it’s good to treat yourself and buy something. I LOVE A TUNA JACKET POTATO! It took me a good 9 months of working at Magic, to discover a café legit on the same road that makes the best jacket potatoes. After trying one, I had one every day for like two weeks. Awful I know, but they are banging. I usually eat my lunch at my desk, once I’m in the work mode I don’t really like breaking that mindset.
I catch the tube home...
…I have to walk through a shopping centre to get home (well I don’t have to but it’s just there so why not), so I always find myself having a cheeky little window shop on the way home! I usually leave work around 1.30pm.
I’m also a DJ…
…so, my fave thing to do after work is just sit with my decks and just do mixes!
Making sure I am asleep by 10pm every night can be hard…
... It was definitely a struggle when Love Island was on TV! But I think radio is such an intimate and personal medium and that’s what motivates me. We make people’s morning; we are part of their routine. We connect with people, and that is such a powerful thing!
