A day in the life of...

Have you ever wondered what roles are represented at Bauer? Have you ever thought about how your "normal" day compares to the normal day of others? In our series "A day in the life of" we uncover what a typical day looks like for our employees in our four different Business Areas and markets.

In this edition, take a mental trip to the US to spend the day with Junette Watson, Bauer Media US's Senior HR Generalist.

Thanks for sharing your day with us, Junette!

...Junette Watson

I’m up at 8am most mornings…

… As I get ready for work I listen to music, talk on the phone, feed my cat and prepare to catch the 8:30am bus, or an Uber.

I practice daily devotionals every morning that reinforce positivity…

… I also make sure I take two 10 min breaks throughout the day

I greet everyone I can see on arrival in the office…

… then it’s straight into work. I eat breakfast at my desk.

I’m a real people person…

...My job is all about people. I am responsible for welcoming new employees and explaining the ways of working at Bauer. I’m also responsible for making sure everyone is paid their money and receives benefits for their hard work. Sometimes if people feel sad or unhappy, they come and talk to me and we talk through what support or solutions might help. I also have to answer a lot of questions to make sure our company is working the way the law says we have to.

Helping others is my favourite part of the role…

...In HR, we sometimes have to support the business through some really tough decisions, but we really do care about our employees.

My least favourite part is…

… conducting a termination.

Employee pay consumes a fair amount of my time…

Teams meeting with the boss!

...Every day I check emails for any changes that will need to be processed in the upcoming payroll or immediate inquiries about benefits. On a day-to-day basis, Accounts Payable is the team I communicate most frequently with. I also communicate a lot externally with my Account representatives from Aetna and Voya Financial.

I’m often having to ask employees if they have an alternative name…

“What’s your legal name?” I seem to ask this question a lot. It’s common to do business under different names in the US but it can become a task!

I usually buy my lunch each day and eat around 2pm to 3pm…

...When I’m in the office, my favourite thing to eat for lunch is salad bowl from Chipotle. Their honey vinaigrette is so good! I usually eat it with a colleague, but sometimes I eat at my desk. When I’m working from home, I make my own lunch.

Home time for me is 6.30pm…

…After work I feed my cat and play with him, prepare for the next day, return missed phone or video calls, eat dinner, watch TV (I like to unwind by watching an episode of the Good Doctor), and sleep – usually around 11.00pm.

The fact I get to help people gets me up again every morning…

…that and the fact I have bills to pay!!
