A day in the life of...
Ever wondered what other roles at Bauer involve? Ever considered how your ‘normal’ matches up to your colleagues' normal?
In our "A Day in the Life of" series, we uncover what a typical day looks like for people in a variety of roles across our Business Areas and markets.
In this edition, take a mental trip to Norway to spend the day with Radio Norge host, Eirin Skarstein.
Thanks for sharing your day with us, Eirin!
...Eirin Skarstein
I get up each morning between 6.30am-7.00am…
... I like slow mornings. I get up, shower, and take a big cup of coffee with me to the bathroom where I listen to radio and podcasts while doing a bit make up. Then I make breakfast, but I take it with me to the office since I’m always rushing to catch the bus (I’m almost always out of time, but still I refuse to start my morning with stress)!
While I'm on the bus...
...I browse on my phone for today’s research and answer e-mails. If I take the car I sing while listening to Top 40.
I'm a morning person...
...so I like to do inspiring stuff in the morning before everyone else is up, and before work. To me that can be anything from a workout, meditation, or yoga, to browsing the internet for YouTube videos, shopping online, researching a vacation, or just general day dreaming!
The first thing I do when I get to work is…
...write the daily “on this day” email and combine it with a summary of the day’s news for other Radio Norway DJs, whilst eating my breakfast. This email gives them inspiration for their own radio shows. Then I start planning my own show, have some meetings, maybe an “air-check” with an external consultant who occasionally comes to evaluate my work (a little bit scary). I also do some social media work and then I go into the studio and make the day’s show. I tend to only have 2-3 meetings each week.
I work with our Social Media-group, and have a lot of dialogue with the rest of the Radio Norge staff...
… including Lilliane Hag and Christian Pettersen on planning and music, as well as my boss, Svein Mellgren. When I’m in the studio, I work alone on my evening music show, Music Night with Eirin. Ida Skogvold is my nearest colleague in the office area, and she can be a bit pain, but I like her in spite of that :D
I've usually left the studio before listeners hear me on air...
…Music Night with Eirin airs from 6.00pm to 10.00pm, but I pre-record it during the day.
If a 10-year-old asked me what I did for a job I'd say...
... I’m a radio host who presents music, entertains people, and keeps listeners company.
I love being busy...
… My favourite part of my job is when I have a lot to do, feel inspired and when my show is full of good music and features; and when still have time to have fun with my colleagues.
I have 'off' days, like everyone else…
… Sometimes I feel uninspired, there are days when there’s not much to say and I struggle to talk about the same songs over and over again.
But I LOVE my work...
… My friends frequently ask me “And you’re STILL exited to go to work every day?” And I say “Well…yes!” Of course I have days that I’m not all that inspired, but all in all I really love what I do.
Especially on Taco Tuesdays!
... This is my favourite day for lunch! I usually bring my own lunch to work, but not on Taco Tuesday! Some of us order taco and burritos from the restaurant, Los Tacos, around the corner…mmm. I tend to eat lunch pretty late most days, between 1.00-1.30pm, and it’s usually in the work kitchen area.
Tuesdays aren't the best for our office dog though...
...Poor Zita gets very frustrated as she never gets anything from our delicious lunches. She belongs to our HR manager, Rieko Kurashima.
I finish work between 4.00pm and 5.00pm…
…From work I go to the gym 2-3 times a week, on Fridays I usually straight from work to meet friends for after work drinks and food on “Youngstorget” in Oslo City, or in the summer, restaurants by the seaside. One glass of Chablis please, YES SIR!
When you make radio, you start fresh every day...
… It’s not like with film production where you have to wait 2 years to see the result. Radio is here and now, so every day is a new chance, what you did yesterday is long gone. That keeps me engaged and inspired!
