Bauer Media Academy extends courses

Journalism school to offer additional places in layout and photography from July 2012

Following the successful start to journalism training in the Bauer Media Academy in July 2011, plans and preparations have already begun for the second year. The academy will now be expanding its curriculum with courses for layouters and photo editors. From the second year (beginning 2 July 2012), the school will offer places for up to 20 aspiring text editors and five students of layout and photography. It sees the Bauer Media Academy establish itself as the only school of journalism linked to a publisher with a broad, interdisciplinary training offer.

Over 24 months – four terms – the layout and photography students will gain sound theoretical and practical training in Bauer Media Group editorial teams in Hamburg and Munich. The practical aspects are once again in the forefront of the new training areas at the school. The theory seminars (four weeks per term) are accordingly closely linked with the practical deployments. The team of lecturers is made up of art directors and photo heads from the Bauer Media Group and other proven external experts.

The students are deployed for a total of twelve months with an editorial team where they can learn about its daily work in every aspect. They will also assist in two editorial teams in other magazine segments (TV, youth, people, women’s interest, special interest), in a photo agency, in the Food & Photo and Deco & Style teams, and in an editorial team within the Bauer Media Group. These voluntary assignments give a deep insight into the sheer range of journalistic work.

“Similarly to the successfully introduced application procedure for up-and-coming young journalists, our expanded training offer is geared towards students with academic training as much as towards talented school-leavers and career changers”, explains Kirsten Oltmer, head of training at the Bauer Media Academy. “There is huge interest in the new courses and the first candidates have already begun their work experience in the editorial teams.”

The chief editors of the Bauer Media Group are actively involved in selecting the candidates for the main editorial teams. This is why work experience in a favoured team is an excellent way of gaining a place at the school of journalism.

Applications for the voluntary placements in the editorial team and enrolment in the academy can be made throughout the year. The deadline for applications for 2012 is 30 April. About the school of journalism
By establishing the school of journalism in 2011, the Bauer Media Group is investing in the education and promotion of its future journalists and thus in its own long-term success. The central idea behind the school is the idea of “Aus der Praxis für die Praxis”, or “practical experience for practical application”. The talent factory is led by a board of trustees of five successful practitioners: chief editors Petra Hansen-Blank, Ann Thorer, Viola Wallmüller, Uwe Bokelmann and Stefan Westendorp all represent the authority and expertise of the magazine-makers of the Bauer Media Group.

The Bauer Media Group can look back on a successful tradition in training over decades. The Bauer Media Academy has united all of the Bauer Media Group’s professional training and further educational activities under one roof since January 2011. Besides the school of journalism, this includes four ICC qualification courses, two dual study courses, the trainee programme, the Management Development Programme, and seminars, conferences and workshops for newcomers and media partners of Bauer Media KG.
